A car crash in Marietta, Georgia, in the US in 2004 served as the inspiration for one of the most memorable scenes in a horror film.

The tragic incident unfolded when John Kemper Hutcherson was driving his friend Francis Daniel Brohm home from a pub following an evening of drinking.

The passenger began feeling unwell, so Daniel poked his head out of the vehicle’s window moments before Hutcherson veered off the carriageway.

Devastatingly, Daniel was beheaded by a telephone support cable.

Reports indicate Hutcherson travelled 12 miles to his suburban Atlanta residence before sleeping in his blood-stained clothing, reports the Express[1].

He abandoned Daniel’s decapitated body in his lorry.

A Reddit[2] user provided an update on the incident, saying: “I live in the area and used to drive by the spot where it happened on my way to work. I noticed the power company moved the guide wire considerably further away from the road.”

The incident inspired a scene in the film Hereditary, which featured a comparable occurrence in its storyline.

The movie, written and helmed by Ari Aster, was crowned the top horror picture of all time by Dexerto.

Toni Collette received acclaim for her role in the production.

The storyline centres on a family grappling with bereavement and trauma, alongside something potentially otherworldly.

However, the film’s most distressing sequence is the portrayal of the horrific crash, one that seems to draw from the aforementioned heartbreaking real-life event. In the film, a character named Peter takes his sister Charlie to a party where she has an allergic reaction to a piece of cake.

In a rush to get her to hospital, Peter swerves the car to avoid a dead deer, causing Charlie to be decapitated by a telephone pole as she sticks her head out for air.

Peter, in shock, drives home without alerting anyone to the horrific incident. The next morning, his mother discovers Charlie’s decapitated body.

As reported by the LA Times, Hutcherson, who was 21 at the time, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and was sentenced to five years.

Police said Hutcherson was unaware of the decapitation when he returned home and went to bed. The following morning, a neighbour discovered the body and alerted the authorities.

Investigators suggested Hutcherson’s blood-alcohol level was likely more than double the legal limit at the time of the accident, impairing his judgement. Despite this, the victim’s family, who knew Hutcherson from childhood, spoke in his defence and requested leniency during his trial.
