Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle says he is not sure if striker Victor Osimhen will be fit to play against South Africa on Tuesday.
Osimhen, who plays for Galatasaray, hurt his ankle during the first half of Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Rwanda in Uyo on Saturday. He had to leave the pitch, and Cyriel Dessers came on to replace him.
The 26-year-old was unable to continue after a strong tackle and is now in a race to be fit for the important match at the Free State Stadium.
Coach Chelle gave an update after the game, saying the medical team will check Osimhen again on Sunday.
“Victor Osimhen? I don’t know,” Chelle said after the match.
“He has pain in his ankle, and we’ll see how he feels tomorrow. After the game, we’ll talk to the doctor and the physio.”
Nigeria are currently third in Group C with 10 points, six behind group leaders South Africa.
To keep their hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico alive, the Super Eagles must beat South Africa to close the gap.
Chelle will be hoping Osimhen is fit, as his return would be a big boost to Nigeria’s attack in this must-win match.
