• Another Samsung tri-fold leak has appeared
  • It shows the inward-folding mechanism of the phone
  • We could see it unveiled later this month

We’ve been patiently waiting for the Samsung[1] tri-fold phone to get its official unveiling ever since it was teased[2] back in January, but it seems that the wait might soon be over – and a new leak hints at how the foldable mechanism is going to work.

The leak is in the form of a video animation hidden in One UI 8, posted by @TechHighest[3] (via 9to5Google[4]). The same source has previously posted[5] other graphics of the tri-fold, showing off its design and mentioning some of its key features.

This latest leak apparently confirms the inward-folding, U-shaped design of the tri-fold, which differs from the S-shape design adopted by the Huawei Mate XT[6] – where part of the main display acts as the outer display when the handset is closed.

With a U-shaped design, there’s a cover display in addition to the main display, as there is on a conventional book-style foldable like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7[7]. In the leaked video we’ve got here, we can see how the form factor works when taking a selfie.

What we think we know so far

We’ve been hearing that the Samsung tri-fold would differ from the Huawei flagship in this regard for almost a year now[9], so this latest leak is no surprise – but it’s the most convincing evidence we’ve seen yet of how the foldable will work.

There have been plenty of other rumors around this much-anticipated device too of course. A titanium frame, 16GB of RAM, and a Snapdragon chipset are apparently all going to be involved[10], and it’s likely that you’ll have to pay quite a bit[11] to get one.

We’re expecting some multi-tasking upgrades[12] for One UI 8 specifically for this foldable, and its main screen is apparently going to measure a considerable 10 inches[13] from corner to corner. We might also see some upgraded battery tech[14] included.

The rumors are that the phone will be announced on Monday, September 29[15], though it may not be available to buy until November[16] – with some reports suggesting it’s only going to go on sale in South Korea and China.
