Having won just two of their 16 Conmebol qualifiers so far, Peru are on the brink of missing out on yet another World Cup. They did, however, beat Uruguay, whose form over the past 12 months has been utterly horrendous. Marcelo Bielsa’s men have won two, drawn five and lost four of their past 11 games, failing to score in eight of those.

Darwin Nunez, their top scorer in qualifying, last found the net in November 2023. Yet remarkably, a win at Estadio Centenario could see La Celeste climb to 2nd in the standings. They’re currently assured of at least the inter-confederation playoffs. A point would get them over the line, as would a defeat for Venezuela.

Miguel Araujo was the hero the last time Peru faced Uruguay, but it’s a result they failed to build on – emphatically. Los Incas have played seven games since, and didn’t score in six of them. It’s still mathematically possible for Oscar Ibanez’s men to reach the inter-confederation playoffs, but for that to transpire not only would they need to win both of their remaining qualifiers, but Venezuela and Bolivia would have to collapse too.
