Former Super Eagles forward Peter Odemwingie has criticised Atalanta for refusing to let Ademola Lookman leave during the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old Nigerian forward was at the centre of one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer, which caused tension between him and the Bergamo club’s management.

Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, and Galatasaray all showed interest, while Inter Milan made an approach that was rejected because Atalanta did not want to strengthen a Serie A rival.

The Italian side valued Lookman at €50 million and stood firm, deciding to keep him despite his wish to move.

Odemwingie on Lookman’s Situation

Speaking to Footy-Africa, Odemwingie expressed his disappointment with Atalanta’s stance.

“Lookman has gone beyond every expectation since he joined Atalanta. The fair thing would have been to allow him to follow the path he wanted,” the 43-year-old said. “He’s played three full seasons, given everything, and even brought European success. What more do they want? It does not look good when a player who has carried the club is held back at this stage of his career.”

What Next for Lookman?

Lookman, who scored 15 goals and made five assists in 31 matches last season, is still under contract at Atalanta and has been named in Ivan Juric’s UEFA Champions League squad.

However, with Galatasaray said to be keeping a close eye on him, questions about his long-term future at the club are unlikely to go away soon.
