WhatsApp has introduced new options that change how its conversations look. The update adds AI-generated backgrounds for video calls and expands theme controls in both the Messenger and Business apps. It continues Meta’s plan to place generative AI across its platforms and give users more ways to personalize their chats.

AI Backgrounds in Video Calls

Video calls now include[1] AI-driven backdrops. People can set custom scenes created by artificial intelligence or choose from preset designs such as landscapes and abstract patterns. The feature lets users change the tone of a call by switching to a playful, scenic, or more imaginative setting.

The change follows earlier tools like wallpapers and chat themes. Other Meta services had already offered AI-based call backgrounds, and this update extends the option to WhatsApp.

New Themes in WhatsApp Business

Theme controls are also being added to WhatsApp’s Business app. In the latest Android beta[2], companies can adjust wallpapers and chat colors using preset designs or by choosing from more than 20 shades. Some tests expand that palette to nearly 40 options.

Wallpapers can come from the built-in library of solid colors and doodle patterns, or from personal images. Where Meta AI features are available, businesses may be able to generate original wallpapers through AI tools. These updates allow companies to align chats with their brand identity or highlight different types of customer interactions.

Messenger users already had theme options, but Business accounts had remained limited to the default design. The new update brings them in line, giving both personal and business users similar controls. Businesses can now separate internal and customer conversations by applying different colors, while personal users can enjoy greater variety in daily chats.

Meta’s Ongoing AI Strategy

With these changes, WhatsApp moves further into personalization and AI integration. The updates suggest a broader plan to make its interface more flexible and expressive. Over time, the familiar green-and-white look of WhatsApp may give way to a wider range of styles shaped by user choice.
