August 26 marked the debut of Gears of War on PlayStation, a major moment in gaming history. And yet despite the allure of experiencing an Xbox icon on a PlayStation, sales of Gears of War: Reloaded[1] are reportedly weak.

Take the information with a pinch of the ‘ol salt since it comes from Alinea Analytics[2], and while they claim to be accurate, there’s really no way of verifying their numbers. According to them, Gears: Reloaded, which is a remaster of the original Gears of War, has sold a meagre 259,000 copies on PlayStation. I’ll be honest, guys and gals, I was expecting about a million copies purely because it’s a Gears game on a Sony console, but clearly that doesn’t matter to your average player.

It’s considerably less than other Xbox ports have managed. Forza Horizon 5[3], for example, has sold millions of copies.

So, how is the game doing outside of PlayStation? Alinea says it has hit around 1.3 million downloads so far, the vast majority of which have come from Game Pass. Over on Steam, I reported the other day that it was suffering from mixed reviews and low player numbers.[4]

Perhaps the better option for Microsoft and The Coalition would have been to launch the entire original trilogy in one super-package of awesomeness rather than doing the first game yet again.

Maybe a new Gears game will do better, too. We will find out next year when Gears of War: E-Day[5], a prequel to the first game, launches.
