WhatsApp is preparing to expand the way people connect on its platform. A new feature, as per WBI[1], spotted in the latest Android beta version 2.25.24.22, introduces the ability to look up other users by their chosen usernames rather than relying on phone numbers.

Moving Away from Numbers

The company has been working for some time on giving users the option to register a username. Each one will need to be unique, meet minimum length requirements, and contain at least one letter, with formatting restrictions in place to stop confusion or impersonation. The point is to make usernames clear and secure while keeping the system simple enough for everyday use.

For many, the idea removes one of the long-standing barriers of WhatsApp: handing out a personal number before a conversation can even start.

How the Search Works

In the beta version, people can use a search tool from the Chats tab to look up usernames. The feature sits behind the floating action button, which normally shows contacts and groups. By typing a name into the bar, WhatsApp checks its servers to see if it matches an account. If it does, the user’s profile appears in the results, possibly showing a profile picture if that person has set their privacy to “Everyone.”

From there, a conversation can begin right away, no phone number required.

Chats and Privacy

The new conversations won’t be any different from the rest of WhatsApp. They are end-to-end encrypted, calls and media are supported, and the chat sits alongside existing threads. For people who want tighter control, WhatsApp is introducing an optional username key. This acts like a passcode. Unless the sender knows the key, they cannot open a new conversation with that username.

One important detail is that usernames are designed to be discoverable. In other words, they cannot be hidden from the search system.

Global Reach and Protections

The search will work worldwide, so finding a username will not be limited to local contacts. That could make it easier to add colleagues in other countries or friends met online. At the same time, the feature is optional. Anyone who prefers sticking with a phone number can continue to use the app as they always have.

To prevent misuse, WhatsApp is building spam detection into the system. Repeated unwanted messages, reports of abuse, or attempts to contact large numbers of usernames could trigger restrictions or penalties under its Terms of Service.

Coming Later

There is no confirmed release date yet, but the testing suggests that WhatsApp is moving steadily toward launching the search feature. Once it rolls out, usernames will give people a new way to connect more freely while keeping their phone number private.
