Ruben Amorim is ready to quit Manchester United, believes a body language expert

The scrutiny on Ruben Amorim[1] as Manchester United[2] head coach has intensified after their shock Carabao Cup second-round defeat by Grimsby Town[3], and one body language expert believes the end is nigh for the under-fire Portuguese.

Amorim’s toils on the touchline have been derided by social media, with fans colluding to mock him drawing up his tactics[4] in the pouring rain at Blundell Park.

The 40-year-old’s post-match comments have only added fuel to the fire about his tenure at the club.

And as the fallout from Wednesday night continues body language expert Darren Stanton believes he will soon choose to quit the Old Trafford hotseat.

‘He has nowhere else to go otherwise but I think, from what we’ve seen of Ruben so far, that he is going to do his darndest to try and resolve the situation and get to the bottom of what’s going on at United, both with the individual players and the collective,’ he told OLBG[5].

‘But I also don’t think he’s a man that’s gonna suck it up forever. He’s just got his professional integrity as well.

‘All football managers have egos. I don’t think he’s going to roll over and allow himself and his career to be tarnished, and he wants to work at the highest levels after this job too.

‘If he walks it won’t look good on him so he’ll try and turn it around to the best of his ability but he’s not going to allow himself to continually be thrown under the bus.

‘It will get to a point where he will walk, I believe.’

Citing his reasons for this, Stanton who is also known as the human lie detector, believes the 40-year-old is mentally and emotionally exhausted.

‘There’s so much to like about Ruben Amorim. He is straight with you. He doesn’t try to blank things or skate around the issues.

‘Usually he’s grinning like a Cheshire cat, even if things haven’t gone so well, but not now. I don’t see the same level of conviction we are used to from Ruben. He looks exhausted, mentally and emotionally.

‘It’s the disbelief really that I think is the most interesting emotion. He was just absolutely gobsmacked to be in this situation against Grimsby. I didn’t think he really ever thought they’d lose this game.

‘His comments about his own players speaking loudly for him was very interesting. He almost seems in a state of shock. He is a deeply disappointed man and I don’t think he fully understands what was going on in that match.

Many fans mocked up the image replacing the tactics board for things such as Guess Who

‘We see evidence of pure frustration plus anger and disappointment. He spent most of his post-match interviews with his head dipped down. That’s also a sign of shame. We see the anger in how his eyes come together, pulled down and the furrow lines in his forehead.

‘When he says the team has been getting better and improving I feel that he’s suggesting his players have thrown it against Grimsby. You feel he’s not far off claiming his plans are being sabotaged, like his team is throwing him under a bus, even though it means they’re losing these games.’

Stanton’s thoughts tally up with the bookmakers’ who have Amorim as one of the leading candidates to be the first Premier League manager sacked.

He looked helpless as he saw his side lose 12-11 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time.

The catastrophic defeat only adds to a disappointing start to the Premier League campaign which has yielded a home loss to Arsenal[6] and a draw at Fulham[7] so far to leave them 16th in the table.

As a result of all that, bookmaker Betfair[8] have Amorim as 13/8 odds to leave Old Trafford.

In addition, they have the 40-year-old at 8/11 to still be Red Devils head coach on Christmas[9] Day and 1/1 for him not to be.

However, despite all of the above he is still not the bookies’ favourite to be the first Premier League boss to be relieved of his duties this season.

That fate has been bestowed upon Graham Potter[10] who is enduring equally as miserable a start at West Ham[11] United this season.

Potter, who has been given odds of 11/10, has seen West Ham lose at new boys Sunderland and bitter rivals Chelsea in the league, while being dumped out of the Carabao Cup by a second-string Wolves side.
