Gateway United FC of Ogun State have returned to the Nigeria National League (NNL) after acquiring the slot of newly promoted side, E-World United FC of Calabar.

Gateway United were relegated to the Nationwide League One (NLO) last season, ending their 15-year stay in the second-tier division. Their relegation was confirmed after a 3-0 defeat to Godswill Akpabio FC on the final day of the 2025 NNL season in Uyo. The Abeokuta-based club finished the campaign with six wins, five draws, and nine defeats in 20 matches in Group B.

E-World United secured promotion to the NNL through the NLO playoffs but have now handed their slot to Gateway United, who will immediately return to the second tier.

The development marks a quick turnaround for Gateway United, who had been preparing to play in the third-tier division next season.
