Borussia Dortmund have signed Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea on a permanent deal.
The 21-year-old midfielder, who can play for Nigeria or England, had already spent time on loan at Dortmund earlier this year. He played 17 matches and scored one goal in competitions like the Bundesliga, Champions League, and FIFA Club World Cup.
After impressing during his loan spell, Dortmund have now signed him on a five-year contract for €20 million.
Coach Sees Him as Key Midfielder
Dortmund’s coach, Niko Kovac, sees Chukwuemeka as an important creative player in midfield. He praised him earlier this year after a strong performance against Union Berlin.
Chukwuemeka is joining Dortmund at a time when the club needs stability. They’ve had a tough start to the 2025/26 season, including dropping points against St. Pauli and a difficult game in the DFB Pokal against RW Essen.
Chukwuemeka Happy to Stay
Speaking to BVB TV, Chukwuemeka said:
“It feels amazing. I’ve gotten to know the club, the fans, and the players over the last few months. Now that it’s a permanent move, it feels like a blessing.”
He added:
“What convinced me to stay was the belief the coach and staff showed in me. I enjoyed my time here, and I want to help the club win trophies and become the best version of myself.”
Another Chelsea Player Joins Dortmund
Dortmund also signed Aaron Anselmino, a young Argentine defender, on loan from Chelsea. He joins for one season, but there is no option to buy.
The 19-year-old only played once for Chelsea but was also wanted by Real Betis. Dortmund paid a €5 million loan fee for him.
With Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck out injured, and Filippo Mane suspended, Dortmund needed more players in defence. Anselmino will help fill that gap.
