Tottenham shocked Manchester City with a 2-0 win at the Etihad Stadium, spoiling goalkeeper James Trafford’s home debut for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Spurs took control of the match in the first half through goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha, leaving City chasing the game. Trafford was at fault for the second goal after gifting possession inside his own box to Pape Matar Sarr, who teed up Palhinha to score.
The 22-year-old England U21 goalkeeper also escaped punishment earlier in the game when he appeared to handle the ball outside his area and caught Mohammed Kudus with a high knee challenge. Despite protests, the referee waved play on and VAR did not intervene.
Tottenham defended strongly after the break to protect their two-goal lead, with City struggling to create clear chances against Thomas Frank’s well-drilled side. The result means Spurs leave Manchester with all three points, while City suffered a frustrating first home defeat of the season.
