The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has restored nearly 80 percent of the 2,400 Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) affected in Karachi after torrential rains earlier this week caused widespread power outages and service disruptions.
The heavy downpour inundated several low-lying areas of the city, creating major challenges for telecom operators and internet service providers. Despite backup systems that include generators and battery reserves, the scale of the flooding forced many sites offline.
PTA officials said restoration efforts are underway around the clock in coordination with telecom operators. Teams are prioritizing areas where floodwaters have receded, making it possible for technicians to access damaged equipment.
“Telecom services are gradually returning to normal as water levels drop and access improves,” a PTA spokesperson said. “We are focusing on critical zones to reconnect people with essential services.”
The rains also disrupted PTCL exchanges in low-lying areas, leading to intermittent internet outages across the country. Since PTCL provides backbone services to many ISPs, cities including Lahore, Islamabad, and Peshawar experienced connectivity issues.
Engineers are assessing damage to underground cables and exchange systems. Contingency plans have been activated to reroute traffic and stabilize services nationwide.
