Florida’s Governor is weighing in again on artificial intelligence, saying that jobs thought to be safe paths to decent salaries may soon be obliterated by technological advancement.

People who followed the advice to “learn to code” or who found their ways into cubicles and offices may soon be out of a job, Gov. Ron DeSantis said.

“I think what we’re finding now at the rise of artificial intelligence is some of those things, particularly on the lower level, with computer coding, some of those are just going to be rendered obsolete because it’s going to be done by AI. Some of these white-collar jobs where people told you, ‘Go to college and do that,’ those could end up being obsolete,” DeSantis said at a school in St. Cloud.

DeSantis suggested that there may be a role for state government in curbing potential replacement of human beings with AI, saying his role is “to protect the well-being of the people of the state … not to allow computers to supplant the well-being of the people of the state.”

He also believes that AI “can’t substitute for our responsibility to think for ourselves as human beings” and it’s “never going to be able to get to the point where it can reason as well as a human being.”

“I think some of the folks have been put into certain pipelines over the years and I think some of those pipelines, you know, may end up being shut off by artificial intelligence overwhelming some of this stuff. So it’s a fundamental issue for our time,” DeSantis added.

“We want to address it in ways that really protect the people of the state’s ability to work hard and make the most of their own lives. I don’t want to see this overtake reason, and I certainly don’t want to see it impinging on people’s freedom. We have the ability as policymakers to add protections where we need.”

The Governor has suggested previously that potential impacts from “very dangerous” AI require some sort of game plan from the state. He also believes the technology will pose “major, major issues” for law enforcement, empowering scammers and grifters.
