Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey escaped defeat on the opening day of the Premier League after Fulham scored a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.
Brighton had taken the lead in the second half when Matt O’Reilly converted a penalty after Sander Berge fouled Georginio Rutter. Bassey played the full match, while Iwobi was substituted in the 66th minute as Fulham pushed for a response.
After missed chances from Kenny Tete and Emile Smith Rowe, Fulham finally levelled in the 96th minute. Rodrigo Muniz reacted quickly to Harry Wilson’s corner and fired home to rescue a point for the London side, sparking wild celebrations among their travelling supporters.
At Molineux, Manchester City began their title chase with a strong 4-0 win over Wolves. Erling Haaland scored twice, continuing his run of always finding the net on Premier League opening weekends. His seven goals on opening days put him behind only Mohamed Salah and legends like Alan Shearer, Jamie Vardy and Wayne Rooney.
New signing Tijjani Reijnders impressed with a goal and an assist, while teenager Rayan Cherki also scored just seven minutes into his debut, becoming City’s second-youngest league scorer.
Elsewhere, newly promoted Sunderland marked their return to the top flight with a 3-0 win over West Ham at the Stadium of Light. Tottenham bounced back from their Super Cup disappointment with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Burnley, while Aston Villa and Newcastle United played out a goalless draw at Villa Park.
Action continues on Sunday with a huge clash at Old Trafford where Manchester United face Arsenal. Chelsea also take on Crystal Palace in a London derby, while Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi will be hoping to help Nottingham Forest to a bright start when they host Brentford.
