DD'Tigress

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have moved up to 8th place in the latest FIBA Women’s World Rankings after winning their fifth straight AfroBasket title.

Coached by Rena Wakama, D’Tigress climbed three spots from their previous ranking, now holding 840.9 points. This achievement puts them ahead of basketball powerhouses like Spain, Brazil, and Japan, and makes them the highest-ranked African team. Mali is the next African side on the list, sitting in 18th place.

D’Tigress have dominated African women’s basketball since winning the continental title in 2017, and they remain the only African team to reach the quarter-finals of both the FIBA Women’s World Cup and the Olympic Games.

Their latest rise in the rankings follows a strong showing at the 2025 AfroBasket in Ivory Coast, where they beat Senegal 75-68 in the semi-finals and went on to defeat Mali in the final. The focus now shifts to the FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifiers, where they will aim to secure a place in the global tournament.
