Team Akwa Ibom athletes have been urged to prove their worth as the state conducted a comprehensive screening ahead of the South-South National Youth Games elimination, set to begin tomorrow in Uyo.

The exercise, held at the West Itam Sports Centre, was organised by the state’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) and supervised by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Mrs Rosemary Ubia. The screening aimed to confirm the eligibility of all athletes and ensure they meet national standards before representing the state.

Addressing coaches and sports association secretaries, Mrs Ubia commended Governor Umo Eno for his commitment to youth empowerment through sports, noting that the opportunity provided must be embraced fully. She also praised the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, for his leadership and dedication to sports development under the Arise agenda, especially in improving athlete welfare and morale.

Mrs Ubia thanked the athletes for their discipline during the screening and charged them to give their best during the eliminations.

“You must prove your worth during the elimination to earn your place in the National Youth Games proper later in the month,” she said.
