For those confused, the Addams family in question is the same one from Netflix’s Wednesday; however, the new animated movie will not debut on the streamer. Wednesday creators Alfred Gough and Miles Miller revealed on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast that the film is aimed for a theatrical release, meaning fans will see the offering on the big screen, though details on when were held back. The pair also revealed that the film is a fresh reboot in partnership with Amazon’s MGM studios, which effectively separates it from Netflix and Wednesday. No cast for the venture was revealed during their conversation with the outlet.

Alfred Gough shared that he and Miles Miller are collaborating closely with Kevin Miserocchi, who runs the Addams Family Foundation and was personally connected to Charles Addams, the original creator of the family. Other collaborators in the project are Gail Berman and John Glickman, known for Elvis and Rush Hour, respectively. In addition to discussing the upcoming animated production, Gough and Miles Miller also offered breadcrumbs on the creation of Wednesday, the character.

Wednesday co-creators discuss how Wednesday comes to life and how they managed to pull off a timely second season for the show despite multiple challenges.

Writing Wednesday and navigating strokes to deliver season 2

Alfred Gough explained during his Deadline podcast that writing for Wednesday is not about crafting jokes but capturing her unique worldview. Her sardonic one-liners, according to him, reflect how she sees the world, not because they are traditional punchlines. This approach keeps Wednesday’s voice authentic and sharp, making her stand out as a character who is already formed rather than one who changes over time. Miles Miller and Gough additionally appeared especially proud of pulling off the Wednesday season 2 despite the writers’ and actors’ strike in 2023.

For those unversed, Wednesday season 2 debuted its part one, comprising the first four episodes, on Netflix on August 6, with part two, featuring the next four episodes, set to arrive on September 3. The upcoming installment will notably feature a Lady Gaga song, which she has exclusively crafted for the show. A music video supporting the track and directed by Tim Burton could also feature. Between the Addams Family movie and Wednesday season 2, a confirmed season 3, and a rumored spin-off, the Netflix IP only appears to be growing, despite the animated movie parting ways with the streamer when it comes to housing all its iterations.
