The Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Sports has pledged full support to the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) as it prepares to host the Zone K Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) preliminaries.

Sports Commissioner Elder Paul Bassey gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by UNIUYO’s Acting Director of Sports, Mrs Nora Ibanga, and her team. He confirmed that the state has approved the use of its sports facilities for the event, scheduled for Monday, 22 September to Friday, 26 September 2025.

Elder Bassey said the ministry is committed to grassroots and institutional sports, adding that Governor Umo Eno’s administration, through the Arise Agenda, is focused on promoting sports tourism in the State.

“We are proud that the University of Uyo will be hosting the NUGA preliminaries in Uyo. This is an opportunity to witness top-tier university sports and to showcase our sporting culture and tourism potential. We are ready to welcome athletes and officials from eleven universities and will provide all necessary support to ensure a successful event,” the Commissioner said.

Mrs Ibanga said seven sports will be contested – Football, Handball, Basketball, Tennis, Badminton, Swimming, and Track and Field – stressing the need for standard facilities, which the state has promised to provide.

With this partnership, UNIUYO is set to host a high-quality event that meets NUGA standards and promotes youth development through sports.
