Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah says Nigeria’s 2024 CHAN team “is not bad” but needs “better coaching” after his side’s 4-0 win in Zanzibar.
The result sent Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles B team out of the African Nations Championship after losing their first two matches.
“I wasn’t expecting that scoreline,” Appiah said. “I knew we could beat Nigeria but not by that margin. The Nigerian team is not bad. They just need better coaching.”
Explaining Sudan’s approach, the former Ghana coach said:
“We knew the first 20 minutes would be tough. We absorbed Nigeria’s pressure and then hit them on the counter-attack. Our performance was much better than in our game against Congo.”
Sudan took advantage of defensive mistakes to lead 2-0 at half-time, with Leonard Ngenge scoring an own goal and conceding a penalty that Walieldin Khidir converted.
Second-half goals from Mohamed Yagoub and Abdelrahman Khalifa sealed the win, leaving Nigeria bottom of the group with no points and a goal difference of minus five.
Appiah praised his players’ discipline but suggested Nigeria’s problems came more from the bench than from the pitch.
