When Joey Woesch was young he wanted to be a police officer. He was intrigued by the criminal justice system, and he wanted to give back to his community. As time passed, he realized that law enforcement might not be the right fit for him, so he went to work for an electrical contractor.
He attended school to be an accountant, and working for an electrical contractor was a completely different professional field and skill set. But his new work intrigued him, and it led to him becoming the vice president of operations at TCM Enterprises.
“Building things is fascinating,” he said. “I became intrigued with the other components that I wasn’t building.”
TCM Enterprises is involved with many commercial projects, he said. They build health care facilities, retail buildings, school district facilities, multifamily buildings and others. The company doesn’t work on residential projects.
The industry has many challenges, but two have boiled to the surface, he said. Finding enough skilled workers is becoming an enormous challenge.
“We need experienced craftsmen,” he said. “Timelines for projects are getting shorter, and the projects are getting bigger. We need skilled guys and gals.”
Another problem has been tariffs. It’s hard to put a cost estimate for a project together when there is uncertainty about cost changes if new tariffs are imposed, he said.
In the future, Woesch said he would like to acquire some more certifications in his industry. His wife, Candace, is an interior designer, and the couple wants to acquire rental properties as a side hustle, he said.
What’s the best part of his job?
“I like driving through Northwest Arkansas and seeing a medical facility or a retail space that we’ve built,” he said. “I like driving by restaurants and seeing people inside. It’s extremely rewarding, and I think we are making our community a better place.”
