Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen was missing as Galatasaray defeated Gaziantep 3-0 in their first match of the Turkish Super Lig season.

Osimhen and fellow forward Mauro Icardi were not listed in the squad for Friday’s match at the Kaylon Stadyumu. Despite their absence, Galatasaray, with players like Leroy Sane, Baris Alper Yilmaz, and Gabriel Sara, were strong favourites to win.

Coach Orkan Buruk’s attacking style from last season was on full display. Galatasaray started strongly, pressing high and creating early chances. Ten minutes in, they won a penalty after VAR showed Roland Sallai was fouled while chasing a cross. Regular taker Osimhen was not available, so Yilmaz stepped up and scored to make it 1-0.

Just six minutes later, Yilmaz set up new signing Eren Elmali, who scored from close range to double the lead. Leroy Sane missed a good chance before half-time, but Galatasaray extended their advantage when Sallai was fouled again in the box. Yilmaz scored the penalty to make it 3-0.

Gaziantep’s problems worsened in the second half when their goalkeeper Mustafa Bozan was sent off for handling the ball outside the area. However, Galatasaray could not add to their lead.

Osimhen, who missed pre-season due to uncertainty over his future, watched the match on television and posted a video on social media celebrating Elmali’s goal, writing: “Big mood, we keep going!”

Galatasaray will face Fatih Karagumruk at Rams Park next Saturday, with Osimhen expected to return to action.
