On “Lost Americana’s” emotional cut “Treading Water,” MGK lays bare the breakdown of his relationship with Megan Fox, opening with a haunting prediction that he will “die alone.”

“This’ll be the last time you hear me say sorry / That’ll be the last tear you waste on me crying / I broke this home,” he sings, before promising, “I’ll change for our daughter, so she’s not alone.”

The track weaves between remorse and confession, with MGK admitting he “pack[ed] up suitcases” and “wrote the song in Room Three, spending Christmas in rehabilitation.”

“I got no phone, just a cell that I’m trapped in while my home’s vacant / I’m an inpatient, but I lost patience,” he continues. “I just broke somethin’, but I’m fixated on the gossip that I know is happenin’ / While I’m just being left out of the conversation / It’s a complicated relationship, that’s nobody’s business.”

In one of the song’s most gut-punching moments, he reflects, “I just ruined their holiday, and lies don’t die, they grow / And everything you try to hide eventually shows.” The heartbreak builds to a poetic metaphor, “The beast killed the beauty; the last petal fell from the rose. And I loved you truly, that’s why it’s hard to let it go.”

“Here’s the real truth,” he admitted. “I spent Christmas and New Year’s, the whole month of December, and late November, in a rehab facility. I came out, [and] the world was very loud about me and my personal business.”

News of MGK’s secret rehab stay comes against the backdrop of ongoing drama with Megan Fox, including accusations that the rapper cheated during their engagement. The turbulence seemed to signal the end of the road for the couple, but by April 2025, Fox appeared to be reconsidering her stance after the two found a rhythm co-parenting their daughter, Saga Blade.

That thaw in tensions became even more public on July 22, when the exes were spotted jetting off to Costa Rica with their little girl in tow. The tropical getaway, coming eight months after their last split, sparked fresh speculation that the pair may be giving their relationship another shot, though nothing has been confirmed.

Two days before the release of “Lost Americana,” MGK pushed back against the wave of hate he says has followed him since dropping his single “Cliché.”

The 35-year-old rocker insists the criticism has less to do with his music and more to do with a cultural bandwagon effect. “The hate for me has become so pop culture that it’s almost like that’s automatically what you say to fit in,” he told PEOPLE. “That sh-t doesn’t even mean anything to me.”

He added, “I’ve let it go completely to where I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s a joke.’ I’ve realized they’re the conformists, you don’t even hate me for a reason you can actually think of because all I do is entertain, and entertainment can’t be that serious.”

Machine Gun Kelly says the loudest critics tend to be men, while his most passionate supporters, “the girls or the gays that come to watch the show or tune in to listen,” proudly wear their fandom on their chest.

As for detractors who slam his vulnerable lyrics or genre-blending style, MGK says he’s learned to shrug it off.

“I became so hated for what has become apparent to me, no reason… just because I artistically express myself, through fashion, music, whatever, because I choose to not stay contained into a societal box.”

While “Lost Americana” delivers its share of high-energy, feel-good anthems, it’s the moodier, confessional tracks that stand out, and MGK says that’s entirely intentional. In this era, the singer had no hesitation about wearing his heart on his tattooed sleeve.

“Vulnerability is how I was able to hold on to the fan base I’ve had for so many years,” MGK told the magazine. “The human behind the music has to show the human side.”

“Lost Americana” is out now.
