Canadian Teen Mboko Dethrones OsakaVictoria Mboko and Ben Shelton with their trophies

Montreal witnessed tennis history this week. A teenager stole the spotlight and a rising American star took his place among the elite.

In the women’s final, Vicky Mboko, just 18 years old and ranked far outside the top 20, pulled off the upset of her life. Facing her idol, Naomi Osaka, Mboko played with the poise of a veteran. After dropping the first set 2–6, she did an amazing comeback to take the next two 6–4, 6–1, sealing her first-ever WTA 1000 title and doing it on her home soil.

On the men’s side, the American powerhouse Ben Shelton continued his rise, defeating Karen Khachanov to secure the biggest title of his career.

The 2025 Canadian Open will be remembered not only for its unexpected victories but also for ushering in a new era of tennis
