The US Open has announced it will offer $90 million in prize money this year – the biggest amount ever in tennis history. This is a 20% increase from last year’s total of $75 million.
The increase comes after top ATP and WTA players spoke out earlier this year, asking for fairer sharing of money at the four Grand Slam tournaments. While top players earn millions, those ranked lower often find it hard to cover their costs.
The men’s and women’s singles champions will each take home $5 million, up from $3.6 million in 2024.
Organisers said there will be larger prize money across all rounds, including early matches and the qualifying competition. This follows several years of efforts to give more support to players who don’t make it to the final rounds.
More Matches, New Formats
This year, the US Open singles matches will be played over 15 days, from August 24 to September 7, to handle the growing number of fans and matches.
There will also be a new mixed doubles format, taking place over two days in the week before the main tournament begins at Flushing Meadows. Many popular singles players are expected to take part.
In 2024, the US Open welcomed over one million fans for the first time ever – a sign of the sport’s growing popularity.
