FIFA president Gianni Infantino has shown support for referee Katia Itzel Garcia and the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) after she said she received online abuse and death threats.
Garcia was targeted after she refereed a Leagues Cup match between FC Cincinnati and Monterrey last Thursday. During the match, she gave a goal to Cincinnati that many Monterrey fans believed was offside. Cincinnati went on to win 3-2, which caused anger online.
Garcia has also officiated in other major men’s football events, such as Liga MX, the Gold Cup, and the Olympic Games.
Infantino reacted on Instagram, saying:
“I am dismayed and saddened by the threats against referee Katia Itzel.
There is no place in football or in society for abuse, discrimination, or violence.”
He added that FIFA stands with the FMF and CONCACAF in strongly condemning the threats, and promised full support in bringing those responsible to justice.
The Mexican Football Federation also said it will help Garcia with the legal complaint process and guide her through reporting the abuse to the authorities.
