The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strong warning to internet and social media users regarding the circulation and promotion of illegal content on digital platforms. According to the authority, while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, the misuse of this freedom to spread unlawful, immoral, or harmful material will not be tolerated.
PTA clarified that freedom of speech does not grant permission to promote content that violates religious sentiments, disrespects holy personalities, or engages in blasphemous activity. Such actions are criminal offenses under Pakistani law and are punishable. The authority reminded users that inciting hatred against individuals or institutions, including the armed forces and national security bodies, also constitutes a serious crime.
The regulatory body warned that digital platforms are increasingly being used to spread fake news, sexually explicit content, and unethical material. Disseminating such content not only violates legal boundaries but also undermines public morality and social order. PTA stated that promoting false narratives under the guise of activism or freedom of speech is a growing concern that will be dealt with under the law.
All such acts are clearly defined as punishable offenses under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016. PTA reaffirmed its commitment to enforce the provisions of this act to maintain digital discipline and safeguard national interests. It reiterated that individuals engaging in such behavior will face legal action.
To support efforts in maintaining peace and public interest, PTA has encouraged citizens to report any unlawful digital content through the PTA CMS mobile application. The authority urged users to remain vigilant, responsible, and cautious while engaging online.
