Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes didn’t hold back after a 2-2 draw with Everton in the Premier League Summer Series in the USA. Despite the draw being enough to win the tournament, Fernandes was upset with how his team played.
Last season, United finished in 15th place — their worst ever in the Premier League. Fernandes had a big offer from Saudi club Al Hilal but decided to stay at United after being promised that things would get better.
In the pre-season, United beat West Ham and Bournemouth, but against Everton, they gave away the lead twice. Fernandes was clearly frustrated.
What Bruno Said
Fernandes said the team is improving, but still has a long way to go. He said some players were “lazy” during the Everton match.
“It’s getting better, but not where we want to be,” he told Express UK. “We looked a bit lazy today and we need to change that.”
He said the tour in the U.S. has helped the players bond, but performances like this are not good enough.
Message to the Club Board
Fernandes also sent a clear message to the club’s board. He said the team needs more new signings to push the current players to work harder.
“I don’t want to blame anyone, but it’s clear we need more competition in the squad,” he said. “We need more quality players to raise the level for everyone. I hope we can still bring in one or two more.”
New signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha played well against Everton, which supports Fernandes’ point. Manchester United are also trying to sign striker Benjamin Sesko, but face competition from Newcastle.
