Viral posts and memes stemmed from the abovementioned tweet, based on the idea that Mario had been friend zoned by Princess Peach.
For instance, on July 24th, 2025, X user @SimmonsJail quote-tweeted a post about the Nintendo Today message, attaching a GIF of LeBron James dunking, captioned, “Mario friend zone while Luigi CRACKING Daisy every night. I know my GOAT.” The post received over 73,000 likes in a week (shown below).
On July 25th, X user @lovelandresort quote-tweeted a different announcement post, writing, “Everyone always interprets this as Mario getting friendzoned but what if it’s the other way around.
