Nigeria’s Super Eagles B were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Zanzibar in their final preparation match ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The friendly took place on Thursday at the Mau Stadium in Zanzibar. Nigeria made a strong start, taking a 2-0 lead before half-time through goals from Anas Yusuf of Nasarawa United and Remo Stars’ Adedayo Olamilekan.

It was the second meeting between both sides in the space of four days, with the first match ending in a goalless draw.

Coach Eric Chelle used the game to test different players and tactics, naming a much-changed starting line-up that included Akanni Kudus, Egbe Manyo, Malik Jabbar, Vincent Temitope, and goal scorer Anas Yusuf.

In the second half, Chelle made wholesale changes, bringing on all available substitutes to give everyone a chance to play. However, the move disrupted the team’s rhythm and allowed Zanzibar to grow into the game.

The home side took advantage of defensive lapses and lack of coordination in the Nigerian side to score twice and earn a share of the spoils.

With the CHAN tournament just days away, Coach Chelle reportedly instructed his players to reduce their tempo late in the game to avoid injuries.

The Super Eagles B will now shift focus to their opening Group D match against defending champions Senegal on Tuesday, 5 August, at the Amaan Stadium. They will also face Sudan on 12 August and Congo on 19 August.

Group D is the only four-team group in this year’s tournament, which will be held across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from August 2 to 30.

Nigeria, who won CHAN silver in 2018 and bronze in 2014, are aiming to finally lift the title this year.
