Governor Hope Uzodinma on Tuesday hosted seven Imo State Born Super Falcons stars in celebration of the 2024 WAFCON title win. This gesture attracted diverse opinions with some Nigerians applauding while some criticized the Governor for not hosting the whole team.
I have come across several online comments criticising Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, for hosting only the seven Super Falcons players from his state following their recent WAFCON triumph in Morocco. Many argue that he should have hosted the entire team, not just those from Imo. But, I choose to stand in support of the governor.
In my view, Governor Uzodinma’s decision to honour his own “daughters” – the players of Imo origin – was a noble and commendable gesture. These players made their state and country proud, and their governor chose to welcome them home personally. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, it shows pride, love, and appreciation for local talent.
Let’s not forget, this same governor also contributed to the financial rewards given to the Super Falcons by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. That means he played his part on the national level before going a step further to celebrate his own. Just as every proud father would, he said to his people, “Come and eat and take some money back for doing well.” Tell me, who would not appreciate that?
Now, let’s flip the question – which is better? A governor who chooses to honour his state’s stars or those who have not even acknowledged their own players? Silence, in the face of achievement, is far worse than celebration – even if it is limited to a few.
The seven Imo State-born players – Chiamaka Nnadozie, Jennifer Echegini, Osinachi Ohale, Oluchi Oluehi, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Anna Imo – were hosted at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Owerri. Michelle Alozie, the seventh, was absent as she had already returned to her base in the United States. Governor Uzodinma praised them for their courage, talent, and discipline, describing their performance as a rekindling of national pride.
In his words, “The steeze and composure displayed by the Super Falcons were unmatched. Even in moments when the nation was filled with apprehension, they stood firm.” He went on to say that it was a moment of profound joy to host the team, especially to witness the contributions of Imo State’s daughters.
Let’s not make a habit of finding fault in good deeds. Governor Uzodinma did what many others didn’t. For that, he deserves applause, not attacks.
