During GITEX Global 2025, Hatem Bamatraf, President and Group CEO of PTCL & Ufone 4G, spoke with ProPakistani about the Group’s ongoing transformation, its role in shaping Pakistan’s digital ecosystem, and future plans following the proposed merger with Telenor Pakistan. The conversation explored how PTCL Group is positioning itself as a key driver of innovation, connectivity, and inclusion.
Technology with Purpose
Reflecting on the value of GITEX, Bamatraf said the event represents far more than technological advancement. For him, it is a platform that demonstrates how technology can create value for enterprises, individuals, communities, and national economies. He noted that this broader vision is fully aligned with PTCL Group’s goals as part of the e& family, which is focused on delivering innovation with lasting impact.
Strengthening the Core
When asked about the Group’s operating strategy in Pakistan, Bamatraf emphasized a return to fundamentals. He explained that PTCL and Ufone are concentrating on building a robust, reliable network that delivers seamless connectivity and fast data at affordable rates. “Our focus is on making sure our services are consistent and accessible to everyone, whether in a rural village or an urban center,” he said.
A Merger Focused on Customer Value
Speaking about the planned merger between Ufone and Telenor Pakistan, Bamatraf described it as a strategic move centered on customer experience. He said the merger brings together the cultural strengths, skills, and technological expertise of both companies, enhancing their ability to deliver broader coverage, improved quality, and better value.
“This isn’t about scale for its own sake,” he remarked. “It’s about bringing more to the customer, more reach, more reliability, and more transparency. We’ll be communicating openly throughout the process because we believe trust is built through honesty.”
Driving Digital Inclusion
Bamatraf also highlighted several community-focused initiatives showcased by PTCL Group at GITEX. These include the expansion of the Ba-Ikhtiar project in partnership with the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund, which now operates in 23 districts. The program supports over 2,000 women entrepreneurs by providing digital skills training and access to economic opportunities.
He further announced a collaboration with ConnectHear to launch the world’s first AI-powered early warning system for the deaf community. “Inclusion is not just a principle for us, it’s a responsibility,” he said, reaffirming the Group’s dedication to creating accessible solutions for all segments of society.
Investment Roadmap Ahead
On the subject of post-merger investments, Bamatraf confirmed that PTCL Group has developed a detailed five-year transformation plan. While specific investment figures were not disclosed, he expressed confidence in the scale and impact of the upcoming changes. “What Pakistan will see after this integration is going to be a revolution in telecom services,” he said.
Merger Completion Expected by Year-End
Providing an update on the regulatory process, Bamatraf stated that the Group has already received Phase 2 approval from the Competition Commission of Pakistan. The next steps involve coordination with telecom authorities and other relevant bodies. He expressed optimism about the timeline, noting that significant groundwork has already been completed.
“We aim to finalize the merger by the end of this year and enter 2026 as a unified entity, with Telenor fully integrated into the Group,” he added.
A Vision for the Future
In his closing remarks, Bamatraf described GITEX as a platform that creates real experiences and connections, with the potential to drive meaningful progress. “This is what motivates us at PTCL Group, transforming technology into tools for growth, impact, and a more inclusive digital future for Pakistan.”
