Former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba has warned that Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup playoff clash against either Cameroon or Gabon will be a difficult challenge.
Nigeria sealed their playoff spot after a commanding 4–0 win over Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, thanks to a hat-trick from Victor Osimhen and a late goal from Frank Onyeka. The victory placed Nigeria among Africa’s four best runners-up.
The top four runners-up — Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, and one more team to be confirmed — will compete in a mini-tournament in November 2025. Two winners will advance to the intercontinental playoffs for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on SuperSport, Ikpeba expressed disappointment that Nigeria failed to qualify directly, stressing that the playoff stage will not be easy.
“People are disappointed. We should have topped our group with the potential we have,” Ikpeba said. “The games against Gabon or Cameroon will be very tough — these are classic African derbies.
“If we have to play Cameroon, it’s going to be another big battle. Nothing comes easy at this stage,” he added.
The 1997 African Footballer of the Year, however, backed the Super Eagles to qualify if they maintain the same fighting spirit and mentality.
“I wish our boys all the best. If they go into the playoffs with this same attitude, I believe we will get through,” he said.
South Africa finished top of Group C with 18 points to claim the automatic ticket after defeating Rwanda 3–0 in Johannesburg.
