In a major transport milestone, the Punjab government has completed the feasibility study for the Islamabad–Murree Monorail Project, as Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz pushes for early implementation. The 40-kilometer elevated track will connect Islamabad to Murree, aiming to enhance tourism and eco-friendly mobility in the region.

Initially, the project’s first phase was set from Lake View Park to Pindi Point, but recent discussions suggest extending the route to Islamabad International Airport for better accessibility to tourists and air travelers.

Officials confirmed that the feasibility process is complete, and the procurement phase will begin soon. The route will mostly follow old Murree Road, and experts have verified that the terrain is suitable for a modern monorail system.

“Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is personally monitoring the project and has instructed departments to expedite the implementation process,” said a Punjab Transport Department official.

A recent meeting between the Punjab Government and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) reviewed options for linking the monorail to existing transport routes. The CDA proposed using the Srinagar Highway corridor with possible connections to Margalla and Rawat railway stations to integrate with current rail infrastructure.

Once launched, construction is expected to take around two years, making it one of Punjab’s fastest urban transport initiatives.

Experts say the Islamabad–Murree Monorail will not only reduce traffic congestion but also serve as a green transport model, promoting sustainable tourism in the region.

“This project will redefine intercity mobility and attract both domestic and foreign tourists,” said a CDA spokesperson.
