The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has strongly condemned the violent scenes that occurred at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Sunday after fans of Kano Pillars invaded the pitch at full-time.
In a statement signed by the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, the NPFL said it had “monitored and noted with concern the disturbing reports and viral video clips” from the Matchday 8 fixture between Kano Pillars and Shooting Stars.
Owumi confirmed that the league had already contacted the Match Commissioner, Referees, and officials of Shooting Stars to ensure their safety after the incident.
“We condemn in the strongest terms any act of violence, intimidation, or misconduct directed at players, match officials, or fans,” the statement read.
The league management also explained that it was waiting for official match reports and full video evidence before deciding on the next steps.
“This isolated incident is being treated with the utmost seriousness, and appropriate actions will follow upon review of the full reports,” Owumi added.
He further assured that the NPFL remains committed to maintaining discipline, safety, and professionalism at all league venues across the country.
The violent scenes in Kano have once again raised serious concerns about crowd control and security in Nigerian football, especially at the Sani Abacha Stadium, which has witnessed similar incidents in the past.
