YouTube is developing new systems to help video creators protect their likeness as artificial intelligence continues to produce realistic digital copies. Chief executive Neal Mohan said[1] the company is testing technology that can recognize when a person’s face or voice has been recreated by AI and give the original creator control over how that material appears on the platform.

Creators Seek Protection From AI Copies

Many creators have said their main worry is being digitally replicated without consent. Musicians are concerned about synthetic voices, while video creators worry about their image being used in deepfakes. Mohan said YouTube’s upcoming tool, known internally as likeness detection, is designed to detect these synthetic versions and let the real creator decide whether to remove or monetize them.

This approach expands on YouTube’s long-running Content ID system, which manages copyrighted material and allows rights holders to track how their content is used. Mohan described likeness detection as a new layer of that framework, one aimed at identifying fake appearances instead of copied music or video.

Clear Labels for AI-Made Videos

YouTube has started labeling videos that involve AI generation. These labels appear both within the video player and in metadata. Mohan said the goal is to maintain transparency so users know when a video has been created or edited with automated tools.

He added that AI involvement often falls along a scale. Some videos are fully created by machines, while others use AI only for editing or translation. Because of that range, YouTube’s policy focuses on openness rather than restriction.

Keeping Trust in a Changing Market

The expansion of AI tools has unsettled many creators who depend on YouTube for income. Some, including top personalities such as MrBeast, have questioned how synthetic content could affect the visibility of real creators’ work. Mohan said YouTube plans to balance innovation with accountability by ensuring that human creators remain at the center of its ecosystem.

He linked the company’s AI strategy to its wider mission of supporting free expression while maintaining an environment that users can trust. YouTube’s new tools, he said, are intended to make AI a managed part of that mission instead of a threat to it.
