Washington Spirit forward Gift Monday was the star of the match in their 2-1 win over Portland Thorns on Sunday, but the 23-year-old had more than just club football on her mind.
Monday opened the scoring at Audi Field in the 17th minute, finishing a low cross from close range. It was her fifth goal of the season and set the tone for a revenge win over Portland, who had beaten Spirit 2-0 in June.
Trinity Rodman sealed the win with a stoppage-time goal, returning from injury in style, while Monday earned Player of the Match honors for her incredible performance.
However, Monday was quick to credit her teammates, writing on Instagram: “This is definitely for the entire team. Great teamwork, guys.”
Since signing with the Washington Spirit from UD Tenerife in March on a three-year deal, Monday has made a big impact. She has now scored five goals and made one assist in 11 games, helping Spirit climb to second on the NWSL table.
Despite her form, Monday was left out of Nigeria’s squad for the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco. The Super Falcons went on to win their 10th continental title, but Monday’s absence was felt by fans.
She addressed the snub with grace, saying, “Yes, my name isn’t on the list. It hurts, but I hold no grudges. My heart is with the team.”
Monday remains hopeful for a return to the national team, and with her current form in the NWSL, it may just be a matter of time.
