OpenAI seems to be entering into partnerships with every other tech giant lately. First, it was Nvidia, then Softbank came in, followed by Samsung[1] more recently, and now we have the chipmaking giant AMD on board.
The two have entered into a multi-year strategic partnership to expand AI computing capacity globally. Under the agreement, OpenAI will deploy over 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, marking one of the largest hardware collaborations in the AI industry to date.
According to the announcement, OpenAI will begin using AMD’s Instinct MI450 series GPUs in the second half of 2026. The new chips are expected to strengthen OpenAI’s computing infrastructure as the company scales its AI models and services, including ChatGPT and enterprise applications.

The deal follows OpenAI’s recently announced collaboration with Nvidia, which includes a $100 billion investment and the deployment of 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems. Despite working with multiple chipmakers, OpenAI described AMD as its “core strategic compute partner”, responsible for developing critical infrastructure to meet the rising global demand for AI processing power.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said AMD’s advancements in high-performance chips would help accelerate innovation across AI applications. “This partnership is a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realize AI’s full potential,” Altman said.
As part of the agreement, OpenAI will receive more than 160 million AMD shares, subject to specific performance milestones. Both companies stated that the collaboration aims to expand access to cutting-edge AI infrastructure while supporting ongoing research and development in large-scale artificial intelligence.
