Microsoft has restructured its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, introducing new plan names and prices that have quickly stirred criticism among players. The changes, announced through a post on Xbox Wire titled “Updates to Xbox Game Pass: Introducing Essential, Premium, and Ultimate Plans,” include one of the largest price jumps since the service launched.

The most notable adjustment affects Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which now costs $30 per month, up from $20. This 50% increase follows a smaller price rise in July 2024, when the plan went from $17 to $20. Microsoft also updated the names of its lower tiers, with Core becoming Essential and Standard now called Premium, while PC Game Pass retains its existing title.

Updated Xbox Game Pass Pricing

Old Name New Name Price (USD) Price (GBP) Price (EUR)
Core Essential $10 (no change) £7 (no change) €7 → €9
Standard Premium $15 (no change) £11 (no change) €13 (no change)
Ultimate Ultimate $20 → $30 £15 → £23 €18 → €27
PC Game Pass PC Game Pass $12 → $16.50 £10 → £13.50 €12 (no change)

New Features to Justify Higher Costs

Microsoft said the higher price for the Ultimate tier brings new features and content. The company confirmed that streaming quality will increase to 1440p resolution, and that subscribers will have access to 75 day-one releases per year.

From mid-November, Fortnite Crew (valued at $12 per month) and Ubisoft+ Classic (worth $8 per month) will be included for Ultimate members. In addition, the plan now offers access to Hogwarts Legacy and Diablo IV, with more titles to be added across all subscription levels.

The revised pricing takes effect immediately for new customers, while existing subscribers will see the increase reflected on November 4. Microsoft stated that the new structure is designed to align content offerings with player demand, but many users have expressed frustration online, calling the 50% rise excessive.
