Samsung Electronics has announced a partnership with OpenAI aimed at accelerating advancements in global AI infrastructure. Under the deal, Samsung will act as a memory chip provider, supplying advanced semiconductors to support the growing demand for OpenAI’s artificial intelligence platforms.

Samsung estimates that OpenAI’s requirements could reach up to 900,000 DRAM wafers per month. The company says it will address this by delivering a wide range of high-performance and energy-efficient DRAM solutions, enabling OpenAI to scale its systems more effectively.

In addition to memory supply, Samsung plans to contribute its expertise in advanced chip packaging and heterogeneous integration between memory and system semiconductors, which it claims will deliver unique solutions tailored for OpenAI.

Stargate AI Data Centers

Samsung SDS, the group’s IT solutions arm, will collaborate with OpenAI on the design, development, and operation of Stargate AI data centers. It will also provide consulting, deployment, and management services to businesses that integrate OpenAI models into their internal systems.

The partnership designates Samsung[1] SDS as an official reseller of OpenAI services in Korea, with plans to support local companies in adopting ChatGPT Enterprise offerings.

Two other Samsung subsidiaries, Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries, will work with OpenAI to explore the development of floating data centers. Unlike traditional land-based facilities, these offshore centers can reduce cooling costs, lower carbon emissions, and address land scarcity challenges. Although technically complex, Samsung hopes to make them commercially viable.

The partnership is not limited to infrastructure. Samsung also revealed that it is exploring broader adoption of ChatGPT across its companies to drive workplace AI transformation and improve internal efficiency.
