Meta will soon use conversations with its AI assistant to tailor ads, suggested posts, reels, and Facebook groups. The update begins on December 16 and applies to most global users.

If you ask Meta AI about hiking, the platform may show ads for boots or recommend hiking groups and posts. These indicators work like existing signals, such as liking a page or post.

However, Meta says it will not use AI chats about sensitive topics, including religion, health, politics, or ethnicity. Privacy head Christy Harris confirmed that existing safeguards will remain in place.

Users cannot turn off personalization from their AI chats, but can adjust ad preferences in settings. Linked accounts across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp will also share AI chat data.

One-on-one AI conversations in apps like WhatsApp and Messenger are included, but encrypted chats will remain unchanged, according to the source[1]. Notifications about the update will start on October 7.

The rollout will skip the UK, EU, and South Korea for now due to regulatory reviews.
