OpenAI has introduced Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, a new feature powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) built with Stripe. For now, the service is live in the United States and works across all ChatGPT tiers, including the free version. Users can purchase items directly from US sellers on Etsy without leaving the conversation.
Currently, Instant Checkout supports single-item purchases only. However, OpenAI confirmed that multi-item carts are on the way. Once enabled, the feature will expand to more regions and add access to over a million Shopify merchants.
The process is simple. When a product supports Instant Checkout, users tap “Buy,” confirm payment and shipping details, and complete the order. Merchants handle payments, orders, and fulfillment through their existing systems, while ChatGPT manages the connection.
OpenAI is not charging buyers for the service. Instead, the company collects a small fee from merchants.
To encourage adoption, the Agentic Commerce Protocol has been open-sourced. OpenAI describes ACP as an open standard designed to let AI agents, businesses, and people complete purchases seamlessly. The company says it is powerful, secure, and easy for developers to implement.
This launch signals OpenAI’s deeper push into e-commerce, transforming ChatGPT from a conversation tool into a transactional platform.
