After X / Twitter[1] user @____JBravoo posted a photo of the rumored black panther spotted in Mississippi last week, well-meaning users like @AlHendiify issued an urgent anti-poaching PSA that quickly turned into a copypasta[2] and catchphrase[3] meme online.

The line, “Delete the metadata off this photo. I’m so serious[4],” has since become a platform-wide punchline that’s getting used to respond to more than wildlife photos.

Here’s a recap of how it happened and what it means.

On September 25th, 2025, X user @AlHendiify quoted @____JBravoo’s photo of a supposed black panther sighting in Mississippi, writing, “Delete the metadata off this photo. I’m so serious.” The picture, taken from a car window, showed a big cat staring directly through the bushes at the photographer.

@AlHendiify’s warning was seemingly issued in order to prevent poachers from tracing the big cat’s location, and the post exploded, reaching over 15 million views and 140,000 likes within two days.

But the concern was misdirected. Other users quickly pointed out that X automatically strips metadata from uploaded images, meaning there was no location data for poachers to exploit.

Many people found the mismatch between the serious tone and the unnecessary warning really funny, and within hours, the phrase started circulating as a ready-made joke detached from its original context.

The overly serious phrasing became funny in its own right, and by the following day, users began recycling it as it grew online in late September 2025.

On September 26th, 2025, X user @mathlovewar parodied the line in response to a post about a “kingfisher in the women’s loos,” earning over 11 million views and 60,000 likes in a single day.

That same day, other variations continued to spread quickly as the meme took off.

For instance, X user @binahbortion applied the phrase to a hyperrealistic and somewhat grotesque Pac-Man[5] sculpture, gathering 49,000 likes in a day, while X user @Slorpler used it under a photo of the Gray Cabbit[6] meme, gathering over 19,000 likes in a similar timeframe. Meanwhile, @sharkpanty deployed the warning on a shark meme, netting 18,000 likes in a day.
