Morocco’s U20 team shocked Spain with a 2-0 victory in their opening match of the FIFA U20 World Cup on Sunday night in Santiago, Chile.

After a goalless first half where Spain dominated possession, Morocco hit back strongly after the break. Yassir Zabiri broke the deadlock in the 54th minute with a neat finish from inside the box. Just four minutes later, Gessime Yassine doubled the lead, slotting home from close range after a smart assist from Othmane Maamma.

Spain pushed forward in search of a response, creating several chances and winning multiple corners, but Morocco’s defence and goalkeeper Yanis Benchaouch stood firm.

The result marks Morocco’s return to the U20 World Cup after more than 20 years, having qualified as runners-up at the U20 AFCON. It also gives them a strong start in a tough Group C, which includes Brazil and Mexico.

The young Atlas Lions will now look to build on this historic win as they continue their campaign in Chile.

In the other game on Sunday evening, Italy beat Australia 1-0.
