Marie Kane will be tasked with enhancing new facilities UF is opening in downtown Jacksonville.
The National Security Research[1] institute at the University of Florida (UF) has a new Assistant Vice President.
Marie Kane has been appointed to the newly-created post at Florida’s flagship public university, according to a news release[2]. The post is designed to enhance the school’s strategic research in defense, intelligence and national security.
Kane has extensive background in the field including two decades in research and program leadership most notably with the U.S. Department of Energy[3] and the Department of Defense. She’s transitioning to UF after a stint as program deputy for stockpile sustainment and production with Sandia National Laboratories[4] which worked on the Nuclear Deterrence Program Management Office.
Kane managed a $600-million portfolio of surveillance, sustainment and production on the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. She’ll be assigned to the new UF facilities located in Jacksonville.
“We are thrilled to welcome Marie Kane to lead the Florida Semiconductor Institute’s national security focus in Jacksonville,” said Kurt Dudas, UF’s Vice President for Strategic Initiatives. “This will be a cornerstone of our campus — linking research, industry partnerships, and workforce training to power Florida’s innovation economy.”
Beyond intense research, Kane will also serve as UF’s liaison to multiple agencies in the federal government and companies in the defense industry along with international collaborators. She’ll also be responsible for focusing in on and promoting funding outlets for faculty at UF that are centered on national security research.
“Marie Kane brings a rare combination of technical depth, strategic vision and leadership experience to this role,” said David Norton, UF’s Vice President for Research. “Her appointment reflects UF’s growing commitment to national security research and our ambition to be a leading partner in defense innovation.”
Kane’s responsibilities also include the development and operation of the Jacksonville facilities that are part of a much-publicized new expansion[5] of UF into physical facilities in the downtown area of Jacksonville. One of the key elements of that new location on the First Coast is the Florida Semiconductor Institute[6].
“I am honored to be selected for this newly created role at my alma mater and grateful for the opportunity to help advance UF’s impact in national security research,” Kane said.
