US hardware maker giant Nvidia has announced it will invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Nvidia will supply high-performance chips to meet the intensive processing demands of artificial intelligence, expanding a long-standing partnership with OpenAI.

Described by Nvidia as a “strategic partnership,” the investment will fund data centers dedicated to developing next-generation AI infrastructure for OpenAI. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that this move will “mark the next leap forward and power the next era of intelligence.” Both companies said they are already working with a network of collaborators, including Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate, to create the world’s most advanced AI systems.

The announcement comes amid a surge of investment by Nvidia, including recent stakes in Intel and the UK’s AI sector. It also follows increasing competition from China, especially after the rise of DeepSeek-R1, which has heightened global attention on the AI sector.

Nvidia faces regulatory challenges on both sides of the Pacific. Last week, Chinese authorities accused Nvidia of violating anti-monopoly laws, and the country ordered its top technology companies to halt purchases of Nvidia’s AI chips. Meanwhile, Nvidia and AMD have agreed to pay the US government 15% of their Chinese revenues to maintain export licenses after a ban on AI chip sales.

OpenAI reports over 700 million weekly active users. The company said this new partnership with Nvidia will “advance its mission to build artificial general intelligence that benefits all of humanity.” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said both firms would work together to “create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.” Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s cofounder and president, emphasized that the collaboration with Nvidia dates back to the earliest days of the company.

Nvidia’s share price rose 4% after the announcement.
