Gov. Ron DeSantis[1] made news by proposing the future Donald Trump Presidential Library[2] would be at Miami-Dade College.
But he said Tuesday it could have been in New York City, had the President not been persecuted in his hometown.
“In many ways, it was a natural fit for New York City, given his history there, given how he became famous and real estate and The Apprentice and all this stuff. And yet, they treated him horribly, political indictment, you have Letitia James trying to do a civil case to try to bankrupt him. That was all for politics, and then you’ve seen the city really take a downward spiral,” DeSantis told Sean Hannity[3].
Next week, DeSantis will propose an item to the Florida Cabinet[4] to convey a 2.63-acre parcel adjacent to the Freedom Tower to host the facility.
He told Hannity that having it in the Free State of Florida was “really a testament” and proof Floridians “appreciate what the president’s done for the country.”
“We’re also a state that is on the rise, and that’s a place you’re going to want to have that library right down there in Miami,” DeSantis said.
This proposal, to be advanced at next week’s Internal Improvement Trust Fund Board of Trustees meeting, will end all mystery about where the structure will go.
The Legislature prioritized the Trump Library[5] during the 2025 Session.
Senate President Pro Tempore Jason Brodeur and Rep. Alex Andrade[6] carried legislation reserving to the state government “all regulatory authority over the establishment, maintenance, activities, and operations of presidential libraries.”
Cabinet members, including Attorney General James Uthmeier[7], are already promising to support the Governor’s proposal to locate the library at the “Ellis Island of the South.”
Like all modern presidential libraries, this one will abide by the definition adopted [8]by Congress in 1986[9], during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, which encompasses “research facilities and museum facilities.” It enshrines them as part of the National Archives[10] system.
