Late conservative Christian activist Charlie Kirk never lived in Miami-Dade, but part of a state-run roadway there could bear his name by this time next year, thanks to legislation proposed by Miami Republican Rep. Juan Porras.
The measure (HB 33[1]) would designate a one-mile stretch on Southwest 107th Avenue (State Road 90) between 8th Street and 24th Street as “Charlie Kirk Memorial Avenue.”
It would run directly alongside the entryway to Florida International University, where former Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez now serves as President and a library for President Donald Trump was recently contemplated[2].
The location is apt, according to Porras, who said on X[3] Thursday that he and Kirk founded the first Turning Point USA chapter in Florida “back in 2015, where this road is going to be.”
“Now it will honor his legacy,” he said.
Kirk, 31, was murdered by a lone gunman at a Utah university campus on Sept. 10. His death has been mourned nationally and internationally by both admirers and critics of his views and rhetoric.
Posting photos of him and Kirk online, Porras wrote shortly after Kirk was confirmed deceased that he “would not be who (he is) today without” the influential figure’s friendship.
“I am devastated and heartbroken to hear of his senseless assassination. Violence has absolutely no place in political discourse,” the lawmaker wrote. “Praying for his wife Erika and his family. Rest in peace, Charlie.”
Charlie Kirk lived part-time in Florida. He owned a home in the Sarasota County portion of Longboat Key, an affluent municipality of some 7,500 residents. Kirk did not involve himself in local politics while there, several members of the Town Commission told Florida Politics.
HB 33 is the first bill Porras, a sophomore lawmaker, filed for the 2026 Legislative Session. To effectuate the renaming, the bill would direct the Department of Transportation to “erect suitable markers designating Charlie Kirk Memorial Avenue” along the roadway.
As of 6:45 Thursday, no Senator had yet filed companion legislation.
Porras’ legislation comes just under 10 months after the Miami-Dade Commission voted 9-1 to redesignate Palm Avenue in the city of Hialeah “President Donald J. Trump Avenue[4]” and about a year and a half since Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation renaming a Hernando County road[5] in honor of divisive conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh.
If passed, HB 33 would take effect on July 1, 2026.
