Rivers United started their CAF Confederation Cup campaign with a goalless draw against Aigles du Congo in the first leg of their preliminary round tie on Saturday.
The Pride of Rivers travelled to Congo with high expectations and came away with an important away result that keeps their qualification hopes alive.
Although they created several chances, the Nigerian side could not find a way past a solid Aigles du Congo defence. The hosts also tested Rivers United’s backline, but the Nigerians stood firm to keep the score level at half-time.
In the second half, Rivers United pressed harder for an away goal, but the Congolese goalkeeper and defenders stayed resilient. After ninety minutes of intense football, both teams had to settle for a draw.
The result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the second leg in Uyo next weekend. Rivers United must now make home advantage count to progress. A win will secure qualification, but a score draw would see them eliminated under the away goal rule still used in CAF competitions.
Rivers United, quarter-finalists in 2023, are determined to go far again this year. With the support of their home fans, they will look to finish the job in Uyo and book their place in the next round.
