Google has rolled out a new AI mode in Chrome, bringing Gemini directly into the browser’s address bar to summarize pages, compare tabs, and integrate with Google apps. The feature, available at no extra cost, is initially limited to US users on Windows and Mac.

This update comes as part of the growing competition in the AI browser space, where companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Opera are already pushing agentic AI features. Chrome, with its dominant market share, is now positioning itself strongly against these rising players.

The Gemini integration in Chrome allows users to simplify complex content, compare information across multiple tabs, and even set events in Google Calendar or find a specific section of a YouTube video directly through AI prompts. Google also confirmed that future updates will bring agentic capabilities, such as restoring closed tabs, recalling browsing history, and performing tasks like booking appointments or generating shopping lists though not for high risk or irreversible actions.

Additionally, Gemini Nano will enhance security by warning users about potential scams and suggesting stronger passwords. Analysts believe this move could help Google maintain its dominance, as most users are unlikely to switch from Chrome even with competitors launching new AI browsers.
